Nitrous oxide remains one of the most frequently used means of sedation in dentistry. It remains a safe sedation method that is very effective in relaxing dental patients who have lengthy procedures that need to be done or have anxiety when visiting the dentist for a dental procedure. Nitrous oxide has been used successfully for many years to help people get through dental procedures calmly and comfortably.
Nitrous oxide is combined with oxygen and inhaled through a mask during the dental procedure. Nitrous oxide doesn’t put you to sleep. Dr. Cohen has his patients wear the mask over their nose, allowing them to inhale the nitrous oxide gas. You’ll feel relaxed and be able to respond to the dentist’s instructions. It only takes a few minutes for the nitrous to begin to work to relax you. You’ll stay calm throughout your dental procedure and treatment. Plus, the effects of the sedation wears off very shortly after the nitrous mask is removed.
If you have a lengthy dental treatment coming up or if you have anxiety during dental procedures, discuss with Dr. Cohen whether using nitrous is the right choice for you.
